The
African Synthesized Regional Integration Index (ASRII) was developed in response to the need for a reliable, harmonized, and policy-aligned measurement tool. It monitors and evaluates the performance of Member States and RECs in the regional integration process, aligning with
Agenda 2063 and the stages of implementation of the
African Economic Community as defined by the
Abuja Treaty. The desire for such an index emerged on the eve of the OAU/AU’s golden jubilee celebrations (2013) to scientifically identify gaps between realizations and targets. Previous attempts, like the
African Regional Integration Index (ARII) and the
Multidimensional Index of African Regional Integration (AMRII), had shortcomings such as an emphasis on comparing states, sensitivity to extreme values, and a failure to assess the implementation of continental decisions and programs. The ASRII was developed to address these issues, building on existing indices and providing a more robust framework for assessing progress in implementing regional programs and continental integration frameworks.
